Pastor Maldonado tops Barcelona tests

The Venezuelan from Rapax sets the pace in a 1:27.457 in GP2 collective tests, Day 1

The GP2 Series paddock gathered this week for the last three-day pre-season test session in Barcelona. And once again, it was Pastor Maldonado who set the pace at the end of the day in a 1:27.457, but rookies did not falter with four of them finishing in the Top 5, ART’s Sam Bird leading Racing Engineering’s Christian Vietoris, Arden’s Charles Pic and Super Nova’s Ericsson.

This morning, the track activity was pretty slow for most of the first two hours, with Ocean’s Max Chilton and Vietoris successively topping the timing sheet. In the last sixty minutes of the three-hour session, the German’s best laptime was bettered by Addax’ Giedo van der Garde who would then stay on top until the chequered flag. He was closely followed by Bird while the Brit’s teammate Jules Bianchi moved up to P4 ahead of Pic. The session was red flagged once after Ho-Pin Tung at Dams touched the barriers at Turn 5. At the restart, Maldonado improved to claim the fourth best laptime. Behind the Top 5, Jérôme d’Ambrosio placed his Dams car in sixth place ahead of iSport’s Oliver Turvey, Pic, Trident’s Adrian Zaugg and Josef Kral at Super Nova.

After the lunch break, Bianchi took charge and rapidly topped the timing sheet with teammate Bird in tow. Soon enough, it was d’Ambrosio’s turn to shine until Maldonado moved up to P1. With the arrival of light rain, Bird claimed top spot ahead of Bianchi, Kral and Dani Clos. But the raindrops soon vanished and Davide Valsecchi moved up to P4 while Ericsson clocked in the second best laptime. With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Maldonado climbed back to the top of the timesheet ahead of Bird and Vietoris. Pic swooped in fourth with Ericsson in tow. Bianchi was the fifth rookie to follow while Michael Herck climbed to P7 ahead of Valsecchi, Luiz Razia, and Kral.

The session will start again tomorrow at 9am, local time.

This is Pastor's best pre-season ever in his fourth year in the GP2 Main Series. After the tests, the next challenge is to win the pole position and hopefully the feature race in Barcelona. Go Pastor!

Bueno, con 25 años de edad y 3 temporadas completas en la GP2, ya era hora de que demostrara algo.Llegar a la F1? No lo creo.
Well, finally, i mean with 25 yaers old and 3 full seasons in GP2 Series, it´s time to show that he is a good driver.But F1? I don´t think so

Leonardo acaso no viste la temporada en la que nuestro pastor corrio con piquet sport ,,, no me digas que en esa segunda parte de la temporada donde fue el maximo ganador de puntos y estubo a escasos 4 puntos del sub campeonato no demostro nada .... sabes que pasa que la f1 lamentablemente se entra con dinero y no con calidad,, acaso chandok ha hecho algo mejor que pastor ... revisa el historial de estos dos pilotos y dime quien ha sido mejor ahi te la dejo querido amigo

"El tiempo de Dios es perfecto" hay estan en la escudería Hispania que no encuentran que hacer con su monoplaza que es pésimo; por eso pienso que esta nueva temporada de Pastor en la GP2 será un nuevo reto, mientras llega el momento de oro para el venezolano en la F1.. pero anótenlo: de que vamos a estar con Pastor en la F1, vamos a estar..!! Lo he dicho otras veces y lo repito; Pastor se midió con exito contra Hulkenberg, Di Grasi, Chandhok, Petrov, Senna, Parente y muchos otros. Sin embargo, dicen por alli que "cuando el dinero habla el talento calla".Yo si quiero y creo que puede llegar a la F1, y si eso no sucede no será por falta de condiciones para ese deporte ya que ha demostrado que le sobran. Es cierto que esta casi que obligado a ganar el campeonato este año pero por lo hecho hasta ahora pareciera que no será tan dificil. ¡Bravo Pastor, adelante y exito!

Yo tambien opino al igual que muchos de ustedes, en este deporte si no hay plata por muy bueno que seas no te fichan, porque hay que ser muy ciego para no ver que ahora mismo hay pilotos en la parrila de la formula 1 que van muy por debajo de Pastor Maldonado, pero no pasa nada este año le cerraras la boca a mas de uno mi pana, calidad y empeño te sobra lo demas si dios quiere vendra solo, españa, venezuela y en muchas partes del mundo estamos todos contigo Pastor, saludos
